Transparent favicon: no background vs. solid background
A transparent favicon can look clean, but it may become hard to see on dark tabs or in very small sizes. Here’s how to do it properly.
Where transparency works best
- SVG favicon (best quality + clean transparency)
- PNG 32×32 / 16×16 (stable support)
- ICO (transparency depends on how the file was generated)
When you should add a background
- Your mark is thin or very light and disappears on white
- Small sizes turn details into noise
- You need consistent readability in light and dark themes
A common compromise is a subtle badge background (circle/rounded square) with the mark inside — it stays readable everywhere.
